Conservative homophobes

Ever since they came to power a couple of years ago the Conservatives have been working overtime to conceal their extremist, right wing image.

Every so often, however, and it’s happening more and more, they let their true colours shine.

The Saskatchewan NDP today released a damning video of a Conservative MP. The video, recorded in 1991 shows Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski making homophobic remarks:

“There’s A’s and there’s B’s. The A’s are guys like me, the B’s are homosexual faggots with dirt under their fingernails that transmit diseases.”

He has profusely apologised for his comments.

Lots of politicians have made stupid, horrific comments in the past. God knows I’ve said a lot of stupid shit in my time.

What disturbs me about this is that Mr Lukiwski is not just some MP; he’s part of a government fiercely opposed to gay rights. In recent years the Conservatives have tried to hide their homophobic image, saying their opposition to gay marriage and so forth is based on something other than homophobia.

Well, it’s not.

At least one guy who opposes gay rights in parliament thinks we are homosexual faggots with dirt under our fingernails who transmit diseases.

It’s worth noting that in 2006 Stephen Harper’s government cancelled the Court Challenges Program, which allowed gay organizations and individuals to launch Charter challenges and achieve equality under the law.

Here’s the video of the comments as well as my response:
