Spice Girls wannabe a trio?

Slam the facts down and wind them all around and you’ll come smack bang in the face of wild media speculation surrounding the prospective reunion of the Spice Girls. Nobody seems quite sure what is going on with the quirky quintsome, including the girls themselves. They are all talking, but it is not clear who exactly they are talking to – or if they are even talking to each other. The rumour mills (which have poor labour standards) are working overtime to ensure purveyors of British tabloids are excited/threatened with an impending revival of late nineties glitz and glam.

The late nineties was a time filled with optimism, hope, and, in some cases, dread. The new millennium was at hand. What better way to celebrate than with high energy, disco-inspired, Ritalin pop.

The 90’s pop sensation burst onto the British scene with the single “Wannabe” in 1996. It instantly soared to number one on the British charts and remained there for seven weeks. It soon became the number one song in twenty one other countries. Spice Girls’ momentum spread like a bacteria, galvanizing British, American, and international charts with a string of number one hits including “Say you’ll be there” and “2 become 1”.

Their first album, “Spice”, was an instant success, as was their follow-up album “Spice World”, released in conjunction with their signature movie of the same name. The movie was a flop and the subsequent departure of Geri Halliwel, Ginger Spice, marked the begging of the end for the band. As the nineties drew to a close people were anxious to find new sounds, and millions across the planet were united in their efforts to scrape Spice Girls stickers off of furniture and household appliances.

The Spice Girls final album, “Holler”, released in 2000, failed to reignite public interest in the group. They all went off to embark on solo projects, but were never able to recapture what they had as group.
Four of the five Spice Girls were planning to perform at a Live 8 concert last month. Ginger, Sporty, Posh, and Baby were prepared to reunite for the occasion as they viewed it as a major part of history. However plans were gassed by Scary Spice, who felt the reunion was all too rushed.

This really upset Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham. “I was really sad,” said Posh. “It would have been incredible.” Sporty Spice however, had stronger words against Scary, accusing her of living in a “fantasy world.”

But a reunion is not completely out of the picture. Ginger, Baby, and Posh are keenly interested in a full-scale Spice Girls reunion – sans Melanies. There’s no chance of convincing the Melanies to join them so they will reform as a trio. The three have reportedly been chatting on the phone and meeting for coffee. The reunion is set to happen next year to mark the tenth anniversary of “Wannabe”. If it happens, it will include a series of concerts, and a compilation album with a few new recordings.
