ABBAsolutely boring!

A review of Agnetha Fältskog’s new album “My Colouring Book”

After seventeen years in bizarre seclusion from music – and the outside world – the blonde lady from ABBA is back… barely.

Agnetha Fältskog has released a new album. My Colouring Book is Agnetha’s fourth English language album but unlike her previous albums which feature original songs, My Colouring Book consists entirely of covers. Her previous albums had a more or less contemporary sound (in the 1980s). Her earlier albums were a healthy mix full of happy, poppy “ABBAish” tunes such as “One Way Love” or “I Stand Alone” coupled with slower “80ish” love songs such as “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” or “Eyes of a Woman”.
When I first heard that she was releasing a new album I was expecting something along the lines of her previous work. I was excited at the prospect of grooving to a new Agnetha album because it’s about the closest thing we can expect to a new ABBA album.

I was interested to hear her “new” sound, and possibly hear some of her own songs. But alas, I was disappointment to hear a bland compilation of dated sixties tunes that make Anne Murray sound like Courtney Love in comparison.

She takes us by the hand for a nice Sunday stroll through a humdrum land of colouring books, summer wines, and even a trip to the moon!

However, it’s not all crap! “When you walk in the room” has a very catchy, contemporary, uptempo sound that would make any ABBA fan scream!

My Colouring Book provides the perfect background music for a nice quiet evening on the porch, sipping tea and staring at the sky. But you could save yourself some time and money and pop a few sleeping pills – it will undoubtedly have the same effect as this album. Agnetha, the longtime holdout to an ABBA reunion, has put virtually no effort promoting her album, much to the chagrin of ABBA and Agnetha fans
everywhere.

On the one hand this album is a loving tribute to classic artists by an equally estimable songstress, but on the other it seems like it’s little more than glorified karaoke by a self indulgent wash-up.
