10 years of nathaniel.ca!

Today marks the 10th anniversary of nathaniel.ca! w00t!

Here’s a flash animation I made, but never used, for my site:

A flash video that I made for this website back in 2001.

I launched my first website on Angelfire back in 1997, moved over to GeoCities in 1998, and finally settled on my own domain in 2001. What started as a choppy website about my comic “Sensei Wong” went on to serve as a venting space, soap box, portfolio, open journal, travelogue, blog, portfolio, and probably a few other things I’m forgetting.

“I remember putting it up on my old web server that’s no longer in existence,” said Housemate. “I still have the hard drive but can’t access it. I don’t have an SCSI controller so I can’t get the old files from my site anymore.”

Fortunately, I backed my original site up on CD and floppy disc back in 2001. Here’s what the original site looked like:

original nathaniel.ca page
A screencap of my website as it appeared in 2001. I still have the shirt in this photo… and it still fits!
The original header of nathaniel.ca. The site motto, “radiating sovereignty alongside the rarest virtue” was my attempt at poetry but I don’t know what it means.

The sidebar design was based on a Salvatore Ferragamo shirt that I loved but couldn’t afford. The overall aesthetic of the site was a bit splashy and over the top but I guess it speaks to my state of being at 19. and 20.

Here’s how I described myself then:

If life came with instructions I must have spilled cola all over mine. I was never one to let the limited expectations of others impede me from achieving success. In January I will start classes at Trent University which is located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. I left my hometown Nanaimo, British Columbia over two years ago and moved to Vancouver.

Being in this very international city has made me realise that the greatest thing life offers me at this point is education. I have come to the resolution that I do not want to be preparing grande/non-sweet vanilla/soy/140 degree latés to gaudy American tourists when I am 35. No, I have the right to choose my own destiny and it certainly does not involve being a minimum wage earning, disposable pawn in a corporate wasteland.

Without a university degree this rather unsavory destiny will definitely be mine.

I have been described as many things but boring has never been one of them! I am very energetic, spontaneous, and outgoing. I am also quite blunt as I always say it how it is and never shy away from raising a little hell! I am passionate. What do I like/dislike? What I like: journalism, anything with sugar in it politics, books (Lots, and various genres), politics, hanging out with friends. What I dislike: Snobbery, crap, misery, peanut butter. I also don’t care much for clubs or bars.

Here’s to another 10 years!

I am a resident of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada who has blogged here for 20 years. I like to share my thoughts and feelings on my own online space. From 1998 until 2017 I worked as a journalist and I hope to use this website as an archive for all of my stories.
