I’m not going to be a bad driver – I promise!

I’m getting a lot of silly comments from friends since I got my driver’s licence on Friday.  They usually make some remark about how the idea of me driving scares them.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little clumsy at times.  I can be a bit absent minded too. But with a little practice, self-discipline and patience I can be very effective at any task I put my mind to and I consider driving to be a very serious task.

Over the years I’ve witnessed first hand the damage that unsafe driving can inflict on people. I have had friends who have been seriously injured or killed because of careless driving and I think I’ve held off on getting a licence because I am afraid of what cars can do.

But it’s not what cars do or don’t do, it’s what people do. I’ll have to drive eventually as I want to be a full time reporter one day. So, if I learn all I can about safe driving techniques and apply it to the road, I’m confident I’ll be a very good driver.

So, if people really fear the prospect of me driving that’s fine, but frankly, it’d make more sense if you encouraged me in learning safe driving techniques rather than joking about what a Gong Show it’ll be.

I am a resident of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada who has blogged here for 20 years. I like to share my thoughts and feelings on my own online space. From 1998 until 2017 I worked as a journalist and I hope to use this website as an archive for all of my stories.

  1. You are going to be a great driver!! Learning to drive can be scary, just take your time and only drive where you are comfortable (know your limitations as a new driver). And remember everyone makes mistakes when they are learning so dont worry too much!

  2. Tell me about it! It only feeds our deep seeded insecurities about driving. We’re going to be great! Everyone started somewhere. Plus, we won’t even mention those who haven’t even made any attempt to get their learners yet. They have no right to comment. Pooh Pooh on them!
