Getting off Effexor

In October, 2006 I went on this drug called Effexor to help stabalise my moods while dealing with the rigours of a post-graduate journalism program.

I’d been on the drug in years past to help cope with depression or moodswings. I’d go off the drug only when my medical insurance ran out.

The drug makes me feel like crap. It numbs my moods and has killed any sex drive I might have had. Worst of all, it’s caused significant weight gain. When I started the drug back in 2006 I weiged approximately 162 lbs and now I weigh 200lbs. I haven’t changed my eating habits, in fact I probably eat less and exercise more than before.

Yesterday I took my last pill and now I’m getting ready for the terrible effects of withdrawl. The dizzyness, vomiting, heart palpataions and brain freezes are on their way, but I’m determined to win this battle and become Effexor free.

I am a resident of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada who has blogged here for 20 years. I like to share my thoughts and feelings on my own online space. From 1998 until 2017 I worked as a journalist and I hope to use this website as an archive for all of my stories.

  1. Effexor and Welbutrin.

Well what can I say except that I am going totally crazy, vomiting and depression all over again. Ya see I was on effexor for many years and went up in strength twice, well now it does not work at all. My my Dr suggested I go on a low dose of effexor and about 75mgs on Welbutrin for a week. I am passed the week and I am not doing well at all. I have not been outside in 6 days and I have missed a week of work with no ambition whatsoever. Vomiiting, dizziness and rining in my ears. I have no want to do anyghing. I am very mad, cause I have an awesome Dr. but failed to mention this. I quit smoking a month ago and was diagnosed that I am going through menopause. I am dealing with allot, but I am not going back to effexor nor smoking ever again. What the hell do I do to make this easier for me as well as how long is this going to take??? Can someone help me????

  2. My name is Dennis Norman and i would like to show you my personal experience with Effexor.

I am 42 years old. Have been on Effexor for at least 4 years now. Many medline sources, (NE J Med, etc.), cite doses of at least 225mg or over are required In summary, the citations clearly indicate that at 225mg, the medication finally BEGINS to elevate dopamine levels (as well as elevations in SE and NE). However, it is only when dopamine if finally stimulated that the ultimate therapeutic effect begins Thus, patients require dosing of 225mg or above for ultimate therapeutic effect. At 450mg, I have no side effects; nor do I experience side effects if I miss a couple days; no side effects if I only take only 1 or 2 pills a day rather than 3 for a period of a week or so..

I have experienced some of these side effects-
    sweating, gained weight, headache

I hope this information will be useful to others,
    Dennis Norman
